  • Very Impressive - Jetta S Stick

It is really almost hard to believe how good a car this is! But it definitely is. I bought a '19 Jetta S with Manual transmission and Driver Assist package (blind spot, front collision avoidance technology and cross traffic alert in rear). My car also had VW maintenance at 10,000 and 20,000 miles, the full Roadside Assistance kit for trunk, All weather mats front and rear and Car-Go trunk liner. Sticker price was 20,425; I bought it for 16,500. I added the hard wired Day / Night rearview mirror with Homelink (a very smart option IMO). My car had Bridgestone tires which I preferred. I am totally impressed with the car. Fit and finish are excellent. The lines are much better than the older models. The interior is quiet and comfortable even though this is a base model. Apple Car Play works as smoothly as you would expect and the audio head is perfectly sufficient for me. Yes, I agree that Sirius/XM would have been nice, but I have SXM on my iPhone from a mobile subscription and it plays fine for me through Bluetooth on the VW head. I also really like the electronic parking brake. Most cars with this price point have a manual parking brake. The electronic one on this car allows you to start out forward or in reverse with the parking brake active and it automatically disengages when you let out the clutch. Found this out in reading the Owner's Manual and so glad I found this nice feature. My daughter leases a 2018 VW Tiguan S and, like her, I find the S trim to be more than sufficient on this car. Who wouldn't want the SE or SEL trim? But at more than 3,000 more than what I paid, I am perfectly happy with all that is packed into the S model. VW called this one right! I am in awe of the responsiveness of the 1.4T motor with the Manual transmission as well as the impressive gas mileage (first drive on highway got me just shy of 42 mpg). The 6 speed stick shifter is truly silky smooth, as good as past BMW's I have owned. The German design and technology is evident throughout. The day after delivery, I had to drive on secondary roads on a 100 mile trip. The weather conditions were just horrible -- high winds, slushy roads, heavy rain / freezing rain / snow. The car remained quiet, responsive, non-flappable and simply stuck to the highway regardless of the wind gusts. I felt very safe and comfortable throughout. I managed another 42 mpg going 60-62 mph. I mainly got this car to use as a tow vehicle behind my 45' motor coach, but I am so impressed with it that it will definitely be a daily driver for me for a lot of the time. I am a big car guy, having owned at least 140 new cars over the years and to be as impressed with this one as I am says a lot. The dealer does not sell lots of S models and not many sticks at all; I am really glad I found this one equipped as it was and made my deal for it. And how about the incredible VW 6 year / 72,000 mile warranty?? You can run it for three years and still have another three year bumper to bumper warranty which is transferrable to a new owner. Fabulous deal! I am very, very happy with my purchase. VW is doing it right on this car!
  • An absolute hoot to drive

Bought a leftover 2019 GLI S a couple weeks ago. When looking for a practical, engaging and mature car, there aren't too many options south of $45k. With the 6 speed manual, this car is an absolute blast to drive (I'm sure the 7sp DSG is comparably fun). Like others, I'm slightly disappointed with the cheaper plastics and spartan entertainment options but those are the only complaints! The engine has more than enough power to make the car a rocket. The ride is adequate given the price point, and there is plenty of interior space for my wife and teenage child. Aside from the ear to ear grin factor, I'm absolutely stunned that I'm averaging 34 mpg in mixed driving. If you're looking for a reasonably priced car that is fun to drive, has plenty of space, gets great gas mileage and looks good - you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if a GLI wasnt on your short list to explore!
  • The GLI is a steal

I got the Jetta GLI 35th Anniversary Edition in August 2019 as my wife and I were expecting our first child in Jan 2020. We needed a car to replace a Mini Cooper that could easily take a rear facing child seat and I wanted a fun car to drive to work every day. The GLI fit the requirements. Handling, braking, ride are fantastic and I am averaging 29mpg during my 40 mile round trip daily commutes in the DC area. When I need it to calm down an be a quiet car with decent mileage, I put it in Eco or comfort mode to help deal with the traffic and the ride is nice and smooth. But, when I get some time to carve back roads, the other modes turn the cars abilities up a little bit (sharper throttle with the Sport mode, manually controlling the gears, and a weighty steering). The trunk is massive, bigger/more usable than our other car, a 2016 honda accord. I can easily get the stroller in the GLI, where it takes a bit of wrangling to put it in the accord. Some of the down sides I have experienced are related to amenities I wish it had, and kind of expected to be there. There isn't sun glass holder, the stock all-season tires can't handle the cars abilities, the entertainment system while very good/responsive does not have XM or HD radio as an option or even as a dealer add-on, the sound system is a little weak, and the passenger seat it not adjustable for height. The interior materials are not as good as a GTI, but it has more room where I needed it in the back seat and trunk.
